Laos is situated in the center of Indochina and shares borders with Myanmar to the Northwest, China to the North, Thailand to the West, and Cambodia to the South and Vietnam to the East. With a total area of 236,800 square kilometers, around 70% of Laos' terrain is mountainous, reaching a maximum elevation of 2,820 meters in Xieng Khouang Province. The landscapes of northern Laos and the regions adjacent to Vietnam, particularly, are dominated by mountains. The main geographical feature in the west is the Mekong River and, in fact, forms a natural border with Thailand in some areas. The Mekong flows through nearly 1,900 kilometers of Lao territory and shapes much of the lifestyle of the people of Laos. In the South the Mekong reaches a breadth of 20 kilometers, creating an area with thousands of islands. Lao is the official and dominant language in Laos and nearly half of the population speaks ethnic minority languages in rural areas. Laos has two broad seasons. The rainy season runs from May through October and the dry season from November to April. Most rain falls in the south.

An estimated 131 different ethnic groups can be found in Laos, which have been broadly categorized into 3 main groups according to linguistic and ethnic as well as to geographic criteria. The largest of these groups with about two thirds of the population is known as the ‘lowland Lao’, or Lao Loum. People here are very friendly, open-mined and sociable. If you meet troubles during trips, the people of Laos are ready to help you. Furthermore, Theravada Buddhism mainly impacts Lao culture. It is reflected from language to the temple and in art, customs, rituals and literature, performing arts, etc. Sticky rice is a staple food and has cultural and religious significance to the Lao people.
